Discover the mission, people, and programs that make AGSA a thriving, welcoming community for African scholars and allies on campus.

A polished whiteboard in a graduate study room, filled with neatly written markers in dark gray and muted teal, outlining a project titled “African Graduate Student Support Initiative.” Bullet points detail mentorship, workshops, and cultural events, with small arrows and tidy diagrams connecting ideas. At the base of the whiteboard, a slim aluminum tray holds carefully aligned markers and an eraser. The surrounding walls are a soft, warm gray, and a glass panel to the side reflects soft overhead lighting, adding subtle depth. The lighting is evenly distributed, eliminating harsh glare while providing clear legibility. Captured at a slight angle with moderate depth of field to keep all text in focus, the photograph exudes clarity, structure, and a forward-thinking, professional atmosphere.
An elegant conference room table in a modern university building, covered with neatly arranged materials: a central world map focused on Africa in muted blues and grays, several open notebooks filled with tidy handwritten notes, and printed agenda sheets titled “AGSA Strategic Planning.” A pair of slim, brushed-metal pens lies parallel beside the documents. The table is a dark walnut with a satin finish, reflecting soft overhead LED lighting that creates controlled, minimal shadows. In the blurred background, glass walls reveal abstract campus architecture in neutral tones. Shot from a slightly elevated angle with balanced composition and photographic realism, the scene feels structured, collaborative, and professional, emphasizing thoughtful organization and academic purpose.

Our journey began in 2018 with a simple need for connection. What started as a WhatsApp group founded by three friends (Nnanya, Dammy, and Emmanuel) was fueled by a desire to unite the few African graduate students at CU Boulder. It began with shared dinners and weekend “whines,” creating a home away from home.

What began as a small circle quickly transformed into a vibrant, supportive community. Over the next five years, as more African students joined the Buff family, our mission expanded. We established our signature Fall Welcome event to ensure every incoming student felt seen and supported from day one. This growth was made possible by the dedicated members who stepped up to sustain our momentum and spirit.

In 2025, we reached a major milestone by officially registering as a Recognized Student Organization (RSO). Today, AGSA at CU Boulder has expanded its horizons, forming strategic partnerships with other African student bodies across Colorado and diversifying our events to celebrate the rich heritage and academic excellence of the African diaspora.
